Why 99% Fail in this Holistic Definition Test?
In continuation with my earlier post — Why do you think Modern Medicine is NOT Holistic? — this piece of article intends to delve into the understanding of the word “Holistic”. Without a better and scientific understanding of this word — it is almost absurd to segregate and label various therapeutic systems into holistic or not.
The craze is unusual about the word holistic — holistic health, holistic medicine, holistic approach etc.
I’ve talked to a lot of health enthusiasts, and I can tell you that 99.9% of them don’t really know what they mean when they say “holistic.” When you are more explicit in your question to them, they may name a few random therapies, mind, or mental health..
I have even heard holistic coaches talk incoherently about meditation, maintaining a healthy mind-body balance, and healthy eating — in an effort to explain holistic.
I’m not making judgements because there isn’t a single right answer. But when the clarity of the pursuit is missing, you are neither in a position to logically comprehend the inadequacies of one system nor appreciate the clarity of another holistic system.
The result is you have to pitch holistic viewpoint against the scientific temperament. Modern medicine is based on some scientific principles, when you criticize such a system, your alternative thought currents are instantly labeled as unscientific.
So there comes a demand of seeking separation of science from holistic approach. Hence it is essential to define your position — what do you really mean by “holistic”?
Sometimes, questions and counterquestions are more effective in stimulating human thought than tens of pages of leading answers.
Provoking Questions:
You definitely carry certain beliefs regarding holistic approach. Try to define holistic by yourself and then ask these counter questions.
- If modern medicine is not holistic, what is it? Do you have a word for it?
- If Modern medicine is able to operate under scientific principles, why your otherwise holistic methods can’t?
- Why do you consider a chemical drug as not holistic?
- Are vitamin capsules, protein powders holistic?
- According to you, why a chemical drug is NOT holistic ,but a chemical vitamin is?
- Which is holistic — chemical vitamin or the plant which has the natural vitamin?
- Why is a therapy like Acupuncture is considered holistic but not modern medicine?
The question may contradict themselves, but all possible combinations are covered there depending on the belief you carry about holistic medicine and approach.
Try to cross check your understanding of holistic by answering the questions logically. If you are stuck up or find a contradiction somewhere, you may want to readjust your current understanding of holistic mechanisms.
Science is the domain of anything that works. If a certain therapy is effective, there must be a scientific mechanism at action that merits investigation. When scientific framework is unable to explain the mechanism, it’s time to logically expand the framework. And scientific framework constantly expands in its pursuit.
Again, I purposefully don’t want to give any answers here. Purpose is to ignite a thought process in you. I am NOT talking about a foreign object here, I’m talking about a “living human body” which all of you possess right now. So use all your faculties to initiate a deep thoughtful conversation inside you based on the questions above.
As I said earlier — A probing mind is the first step.
